{"id":67,"date":"2014-03-13T02:37:45","date_gmt":"2014-03-13T02:37:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oldkaren.com\/?p=67"},"modified":"2014-03-13T02:37:45","modified_gmt":"2014-03-13T02:37:45","slug":"brown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oldkaren.com\/?p=67","title":{"rendered":"Brown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My dog hates Brown.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure what created the animosity.\u00a0 Perhaps it stems from the years Prince was kept in our yard by means of an invisible fence.\u00a0 The fence kept him in, but didn&#8217;t keep others out, so the Brown driver could easily enter our yard to leave a package at the front door.<\/p>\n<p>Prince didn&#8217;t like it one bit.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes when I brought the packages inside, I would see the words, <i>BAD DOG<\/i>, written on them.\u00a0 This made me curious about what transpired when I was not at home.<\/p>\n<p>I never smelled pepper spray, but I guess, instead, Prince got kicked or hit by the drivers\u2014not that I blame them.\u00a0 If a big, loud dog came tearing after me, I would try to fend it off any way I could.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been three or four years since we depended on the invisible fence, having graduated to a six-foot wooden one to contain our beast.\u00a0 But the scars remain.<\/p>\n<p>Prince hates Brown with a passion.<\/p>\n<p>When we take afternoon walks, I pray we won&#8217;t encounter Brown because it takes every ounce of my strength to restrain Prince when we do.\u00a0 He will leap and pull at his leash in an effort to reach the enemy.<\/p>\n<p>One day, Brown was coming straight towards us and Prince, as usual, was going nuts.\u00a0 We couldn&#8217;t run away, so I plowed on, straight ahead, as fast as I could go, thinking the sooner we passed each other the better.\u00a0 Walking was difficult; Prince was lunging and jumping so that he kept getting in front of my feet, almost tripping me.<\/p>\n<p>Brown stopped right beside us.<\/p>\n<p>Poop!<\/p>\n<p>Prince was frantic, afraid that Brown had come for him, while I strained every muscle, trying to move us forward, away from the evil one.<\/p>\n<p>We were two doors from the safe zone, when I saw a second Brown.<\/p>\n<p>Right in front of our house.<\/p>\n<p>If Prince was afraid before, he was certain now.<\/p>\n<p>Brown was there for him.<\/p>\n<p>We couldn&#8217;t go forward and we couldn&#8217;t go backward.<\/p>\n<p>Brown in front.\u00a0 Brown behind.<\/p>\n<p>So we stopped and I told Prince to <i>sit<\/i>, not that it did much good.\u00a0 I kept my eyes focused on him, held the leash taut, and continued to give the command.<\/p>\n<p>Holding my breath the entire time.<\/p>\n<p>And praying.<\/p>\n<p>Mercifully, the Browns drove off in opposite directions and we made it home.<\/p>\n<p>I always thought dogs were color-blind, but this is apparently not so.<\/p>\n<p>Prince has no reaction to FedEx vans.<\/p>\n<p>Only. \u00a0Brown.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My dog hates Brown.
