The death of former United States Attorney General, Janet Reno, brought a memory to mind.<\/p>\n
When my children were in elementary school in Greensboro, North Carolina, they attended a year-round school that specialized in global studies. The school was experimental, funded by a grant from the federal government, and I suppose for that reason, Janet Reno paid it a visit.<\/p>\n
Now I typically took my children to and from school and would use a special drop-off driveway. On the day of Reno\u2019s visit, when I went to the school at closing time, I noticed that the cars in front of me bypassed that drive and went on to the main parking lot. I was incensed to see there was a car partially blocking the entrance to the lane.<\/p>\n
Who does that yoyo think he is, <\/em>I wondered, getting in everybody\u2019s way!<\/em><\/p>\n I squeezed by the car, barely missing a tree in the process, and was pleased to find myself first in line to pick up my children. Within seconds, though, the car I had skirted pulled up behind me with flashing lights, the driver jumped out and ran to my car. In addition, three other men, all in suits, came running towards me. \u00a0And they had guns. Strange.<\/p>\n The first to reach me said, \u201cWhat the hell do you think you\u2019re doing?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m picking up my kids,\u201d I said, while thinking, duh<\/em>. Why else would I be here<\/em>?<\/p>\n \u201cNot today, you\u2019re not!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Now that made me angry. What did he mean, I couldn\u2019t get my kids?<\/p>\n \u201cThe Attorney General is here, so we have this lane blocked for security purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n Aaahhh\u2026.that explains it.<\/p>\n \u201cOh, okay,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019ll move my car.\u201d<\/p>\n I quickly drove to the parking lot, parked and walked up to the school. Standing at the entrance were several of the men and they did not look happy with me, even when I apologized. All of us moms stood quietly outside waiting, and when our children were brought to us, we went home.<\/p>\n It turned out to be quite a nice day, but I guess any day you don\u2019t get shot by the Secret Service is a good day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The death of former United States Attorney General, Janet Reno, brought a memory to mind.
