{"id":111,"date":"2014-06-04T03:34:55","date_gmt":"2014-06-04T03:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oldkaren.com\/?p=111"},"modified":"2014-08-08T03:17:51","modified_gmt":"2014-08-08T03:17:51","slug":"polyester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oldkaren.com\/?p=111","title":{"rendered":"Polyester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was a teenager in the sixties and seventies, so I know a thing or two about polyester.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s right.\u00a0 Polyester.\u00a0 The wonder fabric.<\/p>\n<p>Why would a teen be interested in fabric?\u00a0 Because this teen&#8217;s father taught in the School of Textiles at the local university.\u00a0 Daddy was quick to examine the fibers in any new article of clothing in order to instruct me on its proper care.\u00a0 On one shopping trip with my parents, I tripped over my father as I came out of the dressing room.\u00a0 He was on his knees, examining the fibers in the carpet.<\/p>\n<p>No need to wonder about the source of my OCD.<\/p>\n<p>In 1974, one of Daddy&#8217;s students designed a fabric to honor North Carolina State University for being number one in every sport that year.\u00a0 The fabric was manufactured at a local Burlington factory; my dad, recipient of the only bolt that was produced.\u00a0 It was made with fibers of red and white, the university colors, in the then-popular polyester double knit.<\/p>\n<p>And on the fabric, repeated over and over, was this phrase:\u00a0 <i>NCSU #1 &#8217;74<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>I made a pantsuit out of that fabric.<\/p>\n<p>Which I actually wore.<\/p>\n<p>And I was so proud of my accomplishment that the pantsuit hangs in my closet to this day.<\/p>\n<p>I showed it to my young friend, Sarah, tonight.\u00a0 She couldn&#8217;t stop laughing.\u00a0 &#8220;Did you actually date Karen when she wore this?&#8221; she asked my husband.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No,&#8221; he said.\u00a0 &#8220;We hadn&#8217;t met in 1974.\u00a0 But I never would have, had she been dressed in that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Maybe clothes <i>do <\/i>make the person after all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was a teenager in the sixties and seventies, so I know a thing or two about polyester.
